It's a craft I am fairly new to though, so I have gone through all the thoughts on where to start, what is worth buying when I'm not sure if I will like the craft and want to do lots of it etc. So I thought I'd do some blogs on my experiences so far, a few things I have since invested in and would recommend, and some other bits that will help out anyone thinking of giving it a go.

What is needle felt?

Needle felting is very much like the name sounds, the action of stabbing a needle into felting wool fibres, and you'll either build something up freehand, or around a polystyrene shape. I've also seen video of felters pushing fibres into cookie cutters and making a shape to felt together that way. This is called dry felting. There is also wet felting which uses water to connect and blend the fibres to create 2D or 3D patterns and designs.

Needle Felt Kits

A kit is normally the best way to try out a craft, with the box containing all you need to get started, and make one or two items. I wanted to start by talking a bit about kits because they were how I started needle felting, and because I have found them a little hit and miss so this might help you make some buying decisions.

I wrongly assumed that small needle felting kits sold in places like Aldi and Hobbycraft would all be suitable for beginners and created equal, and this wasn't always the case.

Projects where you are felting the wool on to a polystyrene shape are the easiest option, and there are often large areas of colour, but a few of the other kits I've bought are freehand, and definitely not as simplistic. Small animal projects can mean small and very fiddly details, or shapes that take quite a long time to form.

I've found Hobbycraft and Aldi the best places to find kits, some of them seasonal, and some just pop up when they have craft products in-store (Aldi) or new brand items coming out. They tend to come with a few needles (expect to snap one or more!) a small chunk of polystyrene to put the wool on to needle into it, the wool itself and instructions.

PRO'S - Every kit I have bought I've ended up with spare wool, the prices have been pretty reasonable, and there are a good choice of fun, colourful designs out there.

CON'S - Needle felting wool on to a polystyrene surface doesn't really work. It might be a cheap easy option, but you end up with holes, and little bits of white all over your project quite quickly. What they don't really give advice on is how much wool to use for each part of the project, and the overall size can be quite small, so trying to stab in the tiny amount of wool needed for an eye, or suckers on an octopus was harder than I expected.

Have you bought a kit yourself? any suggestions of retailers or businesses to try? I was so excited to see how and where my ideas were used, but managed to control my impatience and not skip any pages. Although I have been a member of Phillipa's Facebook group for a while, this is my first read of hers (have another in my reading pile) so I opened this book with a mix of anticipation and a slight fear of the unknown - I really wanted to love the book I helped with!

And love it I did. It made a refreshing change to read a novel set in the Lake District, and also one which wasn't just a stereo-typical fantasy mountainside location. Including a mountain rescue team and an insight into the realities of life in the more remote areas of the Lakes was a stand out from the crowd move that added a lot of grit and heart to the story.

There's a city boy indulging his girlfriends rural Christmas fantasies, in true (and in some cases very funny) fish out of water style, and the girlfriend returning to a childhood haunt. Where she finds a new community, new way of life and new opportunities. There's a love story too, as with most Christmas novels, and it's a sweet, bringing someone out of their shell tale, rather than overly sentimental mush (although as my Christmas film viewing shows I don't mind a slice of that sometimes too.)

At times I was impatient to get to the pieces where Christmas craft was mentioned, but I was good and didn't skip any pages. Where those scenes came they were slotted in perfectly to the story. To have pretty much exactly, some of my childhood Christmas traditions, and other craft projects I've created since was really special. Phillipa created such heart warming scenes with the ideas that I sent over, it's something I'll never forget.

The Lake District painted in this novel can be harsh and unforgiving, a stark contrast to how warm and welcoming the people are. It seems an unlikely place for two different characters, from two different backgrounds to come together and ultimately let go of the past, but perhaps there is something in a complete change of scene, and that's one of the things that make this novel shine.

If you feel like a 'Christmas in July' (or August) and want to follow Max and Krystle's story it's still available in paperback, ebook and audiobook, and her new festive release Four Weddings and A Christmas is due out in November (details correct at time of posting).

To join in with the chat, competitions and new release excitement check out the following links:

Instagram

Facebook Readers Group

Facebook Author Page
Laurenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03808145748741225659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1776484300972497515.post-45827780152801138022022-11-30T10:52:00.003+00:002022-11-30T10:52:54.438+00:00Hobbycraft Lino Printing Online Workshop Review
One of the things that has been great to see now we have come through the worst of the Covid pandemic, has been companies continuing with the online activities they launched during the lockdowns. Hobbycraft now offer a wide range of workshops online and in-store through the year, and I recently took part in an online lino printing workshop, so I thought I'd blog a bit more about what's on offer and the workshop I took part in.

What workshops are on offer?

These vary through the year, and can involve seasonal, adults, and kid's workshops in-store and online. If you click on the workshops you are interested in finding out more about, you can find out about what's included in the price, what you'll learn, and the available workshop dates, there's also the opportunity to request private events for groups.

While I'm writing this, there are workshops on Cricut, watercolour painting, knitting, paint pouring, seasonal wreath making, using clay, sewing, and a new section called Hobbycraft + with seminars aimed at small businesses and craft sellers on social media and marketing.

What came with my workshop booking?

I joined a lino printing workshop with a small number of other crafters. For my workshop price I received a hand guard, small notebook to sketch in, a bigger craft pad to do the lino prints on, a pencil, and a kit which contained two sheets of lino, a lino cutting tool with 3 blades, a roller, a tray for the paint, and a tube of black lino printing paint. There were also two templates, one of which was used during the workshop.

My course experience:

Booking on to the course was easy, I chose my date, paid and received an email quickly with further instructions and a Zoom link to use for the workshop. Unfortunately, the email lacked any information about using Zoom so on the day of the workshop I struggled a bit.

As a newbie that never uses Zoom, I found it hard finding the software I downloaded on my computer, then logging on, and finally managing to get access to the workshop using my internet browser. I only missed about 8-10 minutes in the end, but that did mean I had to dive straight into the activity and didn't have any time to figure out how to mute my mike and camera (that happened by accident), and how I could ask questions during the workshop.

The workshop focussed on using one of the two templates sent, with Emma, the workshop leader explaining as she went how to set up the carving tool and use it to best effect on the lino to create the design, and deep enough for it to print well. There were some useful tips I picked up about getting a smooth/pointed end to the end of line in the pattern, the best way to dig into each part of the design, and a few other things to watch out for. Emma was helpful and informative but gave plenty of time for us to work on our lino carving, and later inking up to begin printing (there were a few tips on this as well).

Although I knew roughly what was involved in lino printing, I hadn't done any since school, so I found

the tips and tricks a really useful part of this workshop, and something I can take forward as I continue to practice - and it definitely needs some practice, carving the lino to the right depth, using the right amount of paint (if you don't the paper can stick to the lino), how to prep the paint in the tray provided.

Despite the delayed start and having a few little teething problems (I wasn't the only one that had lino sticking to paper while printing), I still ended up with two completed prints and feel quite proud of myself for that.

It would have been nice to have another sheet or two of lino in with the package, as the ones supplied will be used up super quick, but other than that my workshop materials and online session were pretty good value for money.

Would I do it again?

Yes, although the longer answer would be it depends on the workshop. I think the value here is where it's a brand-new craft, or an advanced skill/something different related to a craft you know - then it's not only fun to take part in, but it's worth buying the kit etc. Something like the lino printing was ideal for me because it was something I had wanted to learn more about for a while. Learning from the Hobbycraft artisan and seeing what you can achieve with practice was inspiring.

Emma Hunt if you're reading this, the samples you showed on screen were amazing, and I appreciated the further reading you sent soon after the workshop and being able to ask you a few questions as well.

Customer service is so important and having a set up where you are in the zone 'doing' in a workshop but can reflect on and ask questions afterwards is really helpful.

Have you taken part in any Hobbycraft online workshops? I was really looking forward to seeing Hocus Pocus 2, but I had no idea what to expect from the sequel. Would they pick up where they left off in 1993, move on a bit but with a strong connection to the original, or do something completely different?

This Disney + release turned out to be the latter, and I found myself watching a modern-day Salem on screen. The old town is now a 'historic district' which has the air of a novel tourist attraction, complete with a mystical magic shop which presents the story of Salem and the Sanderson Sisters as some kind of commercial entertainment enterprise - hear the story, buy some magical merch.

The detail in Gilbert's shop and his stage show presentation are very apt for the modern day, and the feeling that the Sanderson sister's legend has become less powerful and more humorous myth with time, but I did miss the spookiness of the Sisters' old house as a museum. Overall though the contrast between the modern-day, and the historical district, complete with spooky wood was done very well. A highlight was the sheer daftness of Becka and her friends convincing Winnie and her Sisters to go to Walgreens for potions to give them youth, instead of eating the children of Salem. I hate it when filmmakers take a joke too far, but part of me wanted to see a bit more of them adjusting to the modern world.

It was really interesting to see the Sanderson Sisters' early years at the start of the film too. The early hints of witchyness, making gross-sounding jellies, and a fondness for much-despised spiders were all unexpected highlights. When Winnie was banished from Salem forever, for not agreeing to some marital demands, and managed to take her sisters with her, it was dramatic, if a little rushed. The following scenes in the woods when they discovered more about who they are were also quick and a bit unclear.

What struck me as a bit odd, though perhaps expected in modern-day Salem, was the reaction of the Mayor and other characters to those back from the dead. When confronted with the Sanderson Sisters en-mass, the Mayor of Salem's deadpan 'love the resting witch face' was hilariously casual, and as if he thought he was merely greeting a group in fancy dress. Even when magic shop owner Gilbert came face to face with Winnie's old flame Billy Butcherson, risen from the grave, it was almost like it was an everyday occurrence, and he didn't even flinch. Billy himself, much like a slightly comedic scare actor at a theme park.

But I guess this is modern-day Salem, where the renowned witches are almost celebrated rather than feared, and even when they do come back with the intention of wreaking havoc, it all ends up a bit tame. I guess this is where the disappointment lies if you've seen the first movie, I couldn't help but expect more drama and more familiarity.

But The Sanderson Sisters were still on point with their costumes, mannerisms and banter, the beloved spell book was there like a familiar old friend, but one with a surprising conscience. There were a few little twists like this that kept things interesting, and a touch of humanity and emotion at the end, but the musical theatre-style song and dance numbers that popped up seemed out of place and lessened the Halloween feel.

That was my overall feeling, I wanted a bit more Halloween, and a bit less of the musical theatre style song and dance numbers and other little touches that just felt completely out of place. The contrast between modern and historic was a really interesting idea, so I did enjoy watching, but it was still a bit disjointed and messy in places, and could have been so much more.

Have you watched the film yet? What are your thoughts, do let me know below, especially how you compare both films. I'm going to do a life update kind of post another time, but for now, wanted to use some free time (escaping the heat of the sun for a bit) to do something fun.

It's been interesting now we have a (growing up way too quick) child in the house which games we've bought, kept, revisited and still enjoy as a family, and Get Packing is definitely one of those.

Its bright colourful box suggested this is every inch a kid's game, but don't be fooled, this really is one all the family can enjoy, and come back to long after you've first bought it. The premise seems simple, with each player having a small suitcase that needs packing for a trip to a certain destination, but it's not as simple as it looks.

Not only are there three different levels to play, with multiple destination cards in each, but you have to fit all kinds of shapes and sizes of items into your case each time. The easier levels have fewer items to fit in, but you could still be changing them around for a while to make them fit. The harder levels definitely take a bit of getting used to, and even when you've played the game a good few times can still cause frustration.

One of the best things about playing Get Packing is seeing people play it for the first time. You can't get away with half measures in this game, all the items have to be securely in the case, and the case has to shut.

At the time of writing a full-size, 4-player and travel-size versions of Get Packing are available. When Cliff passes away she discovers another secret from a marriage full of secrets and lies; he left behind a daughter. The story follows Joanna connecting with Ashley, Cliff's daughter, and a pregnant, vulnerable young lady. Joanna takes Ashley under her wing and whisks her off for a 'Beach House Summer' that neither of them will ever forget. While Joanna seeks privacy from the spotlight and media attention that still follows her wherever she goes, Ashley seeks time and space to get her life together and is amazed when Joanna offers what she needs. This novel follows a path of new friendships, old flames, and self-discovery against the backdrop of Silver Point, a seaside town where everyone's got your back.

This was a novel of a few unexpected twists and turns, starting with a tragedy, and the death of someone I expected to be a big part of the story. When a character questioned WHY, I questioned along with them, when romance was obviously on the cards I wondered how it would play out and how predictable it would be, it was a book that got me thinking, maybe sometimes a little too much. I got distracted by images in my head of sequels and prequels. Of Cliff playing out the attention-seeking chef role, and a sequel where Joanna had fully taken over the bookstore, and we learned more of Eden's story. For me, she was one of the most interesting characters, and I enjoyed reading about the family dynamic Sarah had created for her, the resistance, and eventual understanding from her mother was quite moving. I think it would be fair to say that some parts of the story caught my imagination more than others, and that's where the daydreaming of other possibilities for the characters took over.

I liked the little touches of humour such as when Mary-Lou told Mel all about Mrs Highgates pampered pooch eating a neighbour's begonias (why is it always begonias that come under attack). Nate's character also shone and jumped from the page. His genuine warmth, passion for cooking, and how good he is with people is something made to be seen and heard, and not just read about. He wasn't central to the story at this stage, but he stuck in my mind.

Each character has an emotion or feeling attached to their story at various points in Beach House Summer, and the strength of those feelings shines through. From Ashley's insecurities as a mum-to-be, and Mel's stubborn conviction that she is doing right by her daughter, to the weight of the world on Joanna's shoulders it's all there to feel along with them. Like this quote in one of Joanna's chapters: "Most of her life had felt as if she was in a strong current, pulled and tugged in a direction she didn't want to go. She'd been trapped by the force of it, flung around by Cliff and the media, battered on the rocks of life. But she'd survived, and she'd survive this next crisis whatever happened."

Whether it's a sense of conviction, stubbornness, poignancy, or warmth of character and togetherness it's all there to explore. I was also sitting reading this on sunny days in the garden, so it would've been fun if I could jump right in there and grab a cool drink at the beach cafe, visit the cosy bookstore, and walk along the beach with ice cream. Perhaps more could have been made of the beach house summer vibes that were promised, and my mind did wander a little in places, but the character development was very well thought through and the moments of emotion well-timed. I'm just hoping for a prequel, I know there's a fiesty character out there somewhere that could bring Cliff down a peg or two!

'Beach House Summer' is out now in paperback, hardback, and audiobook. I've been meaning to post some more papercraft projects and ideas on my blog for a while now, but I couldn't decide what to do or write about. I recently bought some gift tags from Doodle Bugs Handmade at a small business & craft market where I live, and I thought whatever use I have for them would be a good blog. For some reason, I've always struggled a bit using gift tags in the past, and I'm not quite sure why. I just end up laying them out in so many different positions and am never happy with how they look.

With this project, I decided to make a card to look like a birthday present, with a tag and bow as if you are looking at something wrapped up. It's quite a simple idea, but I love the end result, and the easier use of a gift tag - no procrastinating with this card! I'll put the instructions below so you can try it out for yourself. I'm already planning on trying it out again, this time for Christmas, maybe even creating my own wrapping paper design instead of just using craft papers from my stash - watch this space!

You Will Need:

A square card blank and envelope

Jute twine

Patterned paper

Tacky Glue

A small gift tag (many topper sets have these or you could make your own)

Clear drying glue or varnish

To Make The Card:

- Cut a piece of patterned paper the same size as your card blank, then turn it pattern side down. Fold over each of the sides a small way so you'll be left with a white border (as pictured) when you stick the paper down on the card blank.

- Once you've stuck your paper down cut 6 pieces of twine of equal length to make part of the present's bow. Carefully put tacky glue on one side of each piece of string then leave it to go tacky for a minute or two and then fix it onto the card. 3 pieces across, and three pieces down will form part of the bow. Don't worry if you get any spread of glue when you press the string down, that will be covered up in the next steps.

- Next use a bow maker, or even a fork to make a small bow out of twine to fix onto the top of your present.

- Grab some clear drying glue, varnish, or in my case clear nail varnish and paint over the patterned paper. This will cover up any glue residue, but will also give it a bit of shine and texture, just like real wrapping paper.

- The final step is to decorate your present with a few embellishments. Keep it simple so the card still looks like a present, and isn't overpowered. I went for a sentiment gift tag and a little topper from a decoupage set that matches the paper.

It's a fairly simple project to make, but can be themed and personalised in so many different ways. I also enjoyed that there were a few different tasks to this project, so while simple, it wasn't just fixed on the card and done. I am not a fan of makes that are that quick, as it's great to lose yourself in a make and switch off for a while.

I hope you all enjoyed this project idea, and if you give it a go yourself, do tag me in your creations, I'd love to see them. I am @createdinessex (art and craft) and @thesecitydays (main) on Instagram. I am trying to write a host of fun blog content for the summer, so do keep reading, the support is very much appreciated.

Laurenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03808145748741225659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1776484300972497515.post-51691036730422702412021-12-01T18:00:00.001+00:002021-12-01T18:00:00.166+00:00Pastel Pom Pom Christmas Tree Project By Jolly Festive
Happy December everybody, how have we got here this fast? My
city centre has their Christmas tree lights on, my xmas shopping is in full
swing, and I’ve watched a few cheesy Christmas movies already. There’s still
plenty of time to make some decorations though, and I have a great guest post
here all about pom poms, which I hope will inspire you. Over to the lovely
Hannah at Jolly Festive to chat about her beautiful Pom Pom Christmas Tree
Project. You can find my post all about kid’s Christmas books here.

Pom-pom craft projects are brilliant. To be honest, that’s not a sentence I ever
expected to find myself writing. Years
of making pom poms with those cardboard circles, alongside our Guiding volunteer
Mum, traumatised me. Not because they
were hard to make. But because they seemed to take an eternity and the constant
feeding of yarn through that central hole made my eyes go squiggly!

Fast forward a decade (or maybe three) and I decided to
brave the world of pom-poms once more.
This time I had been reliably informed about pom-pom makers and they are
a serious game-changer. Have you heard
of them? No doubt I’m fashionably late
to the party but, in case you haven’t, they are essentially semi-circles that
can be clipped together to allow you to wind your yarn into place quickly and
easily before making the necessary cuts and ties to form that fluffy ball. (Full disclosure: they are made of plastic
but will last for a very long time and make as many pom-poms as you can
imagine.)

Unlike Lauren, I wasn’t blessed with particular crafting
talents nor patience, and so for me, crafting needs to be simple with success nearly
guaranteed. Especially in the run-up to
Christmas, when time is a particularly precious commodity.

So newbie crafters out there, or those looking for a
stress-free project, this one is for you!
Even better, this Christmas tree will make you look like you’re punching
above your crafting weight as it really is quite the showstopper despite its
simplicity! Plus you get to use a hot
glue gun -what better way of saying ‘Welcome to the Crafting World’ than that!

Christmas Trend For Pastels

My sister Jo and I have always been more interested in
festive themes and traditions than the average person. Indeed we can both wax lyrical about
Christmas non-stop every day (hence why we started a Christmas blog!). However even we were taken aback to learn quite
how much wider world events shape the decorations on our Christmas trees.

It’s easy to assume that the festive season stands apart
from the rest of life, a constant in a changing landscape. But as we immersed ourselves further into
this festive world we discovered that Christmas also moves with the times.

Quite rightly many of us are thinking more carefully about
the ecological impact of our festive décor with an increasing trend for shopping
locally and reusable festive treats, such as refillable advent calendars and
crackers, and ornaments that can be repurposed year-round. The uncertainty and worry of the last two
years have translated into a return of traditional Christmas icons and classic
seasonal colours, with nostalgia playing an even bigger role than usual in
shaping our festivities.

Alongside these themes, another trend is emerging. Whimsy.
Fuelled by a lack of festivities, cultural experiences and holidays, we
are more determined than ever to embrace the wonder and cheer of the Christmas
season and enjoy a few moments away from the toils of daily life. Bright colours and glitter balls remind us of
celebrations and parties, beach and sea life ornaments allow us to reminisce about
holidays in easier times, and pastel colours represent that gentle romantic
fairy-like world where magic and happy endings really do exist.

So, when we were looking for a project to share, bringing
together this youthful pastel trend with the playfulness of fluffy pompoms
seemed fitting. And why not in the shape
of a Christmas tree? The festive season is
pretty much upon us after all!

Pastel Pom Pom Christmas Tree

The result of this tree creation is really quite striking. I love the way the two-tone pom poms can be created with a
nod to those vintage inverted glass bauble styles our grandparents had on their
trees. They look like fluffy ornaments
hanging on their own purpose-built design!

The flexibility of colours allows for so much individual
preference and personality to shine through.
We used around nine pastel colours in total but you could easily tailor
this to match your general Christmas décor theme. Or use up whatever leftovers
of yarn you have lying around.

The star on top is so simple, and it felt satisfying to use
the offcuts from the pom-poms as stuffing, reducing the waste a little. But for me, the finishing touch is in the
lights. Any battery-powered LED lights
on a thin wire will do to wind around and in between the pom-poms. But selecting some with a more unusual or
muted bulb will add to the overall gentle flow of the tree and we were thrilled
with the ones from IKEA that we used.
Having the 6hr timer meant that there was nothing to do until the
batteries ran out as well!

I recently had to pause mid-read when I was given the chance to read and review The Christmas Escape by Sarah Morgan for the blog tour. This is the third of Sarah's Christmas novels I've read and I'm sure it won't be the last!

The Christmas Escape follows best friends Christie and Alix as they prepare for a trip of a lifetime to Lapland and the Northern Lights to meet Christie's long lost aunt for the first time. But the path of true love and true friendship doesn't always run smooth, and there is some emotional drama along the way that threatens to de-rail the trip before anyone has even set foot on the plane.

The plot follows Christie, husband Seb, and daughter Holly, along with Alix, and family friend Zac before and during their trip to Lapland. There are secrets and burdens to be revealed, long-held fears, and a lack of communication that has held some of them back from being happy and achieving the life they want.

Sarah has portrayed the emotional drama well, treating each characters plotline with sensitivity, and showing what a real break/new location can do to bring people back together and realise what's important. The real gift here is setting all this emotional drama against the backdrop of a beautiful and naturally magical location.

I was sold on Lapland and The Northern Lights before I'd even read a page of the book on Net Galley. It's a real Christmas escape, and I almost felt like I wasn't just reading descriptions of the setting, like someone describing a picture, but I was picking up tips on the realities of being in such a cold, but an inspiring place. If you didn't want to visit the area before, you may well after. It was already on my bucket list, and reading The Christmas Escape has at least made me want to read more about it.

Sarah has a reputation for writing first-class Christmas novels, and it's easy to see why. The location for this novel shows the magic of nature and how best to enjoy it, and the personal stories kept me engaged until the end. Couple this with Holly's childlike excitement and wonder at all she sees and hears - and this is definitely the ultimate, easy to read, Christmas novel.

Thanks to HQ Stories for setting me up with a Net Galley widget to be able to take part in this blog tour. I may well buy a paperback at some point to keep. As always, all opinions are my own.

Interact with Sarah and find out more about her future releases at:

Facebook

Instagram

Twitter

Website
Laurenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03808145748741225659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1776484300972497515.post-50756249760775238202021-07-13T11:12:00.004+01:002021-07-13T11:12:58.333+01:00Clearly Besotted Make A Splash Dolphin Stamps - Projects And Review
Clearly Besotted are fast becoming my new stamp company of choice, month after month they release teasers of their stamp sets to tempt me, and they are all so inventive, and so cute, it's been hard not to buy each time. But while I can't purchase each month I do have a few sets now and have been impressed on every score. The designs are really cute and usable in several different ways, the quality is there, and I love their little customer service touches. Each stamp set has arrived in a colourful pink bag, with an invoice and a little handwritten thank you on it. It's those touches that really go a long way to making you trust a brand, and feeling like you are getting value for money because although they are reused over and over, some stamp sets are not cheap.

At the time of writing this Dolphin-themed 'Make A Splash' stamp set is still available on the website for £2.48. I chose this one because Dolphins are one of my favourite animals, but I also liked how they were drawn in different positions for scene building. The little sentiments and stamps to create splashes were a nice touch as well.

I've posted below a couple of cards I made using the stamps, Sticker Kitten sequin set (very pretty colours, and stuck to card surprisingly well using tacky glue), and some stash items. On the second card, I even Googled a few images and added a few quick sea-themed cut-outs which was a lot of fun to do.

Laurenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03808145748741225659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1776484300972497515.post-86754261005914776522021-05-26T13:31:00.000+01:002021-05-26T13:31:48.066+01:00The Summer Seekers By Sarah Morgan - Book Review
May, what are you doing to us in the UK? It feels like we are getting all the April showers (and more) a month late. What better way to inject some cheer into the blog than my stop on the blog tour for Sarah Morgan's latest novel The Summer Seekers. It's published by HQ who kindly gifted me access to read the book on Net Galley, and it's turned out to be the perfect way to add some sunshine into these gloomy days.

As I'm writing this I've yet to see 'The Summer Seekers' on the shop shelves, but it will definitely stand out for shoppers, I don't think I've ever seen a front cover so bright and bold, and yellow!

'The Summer Seekers' follows the story of Kathleen, her daughter Liza, and Martha, three women seeking adventure and change in their lives, and I think it's safe to say they got it. Kathleen is a former travel TV presenter seeking a new adventure after the passing of her husband, Liza is fed up with being the dutiful wife and mother that everyone depends on, and Martha is feeling lost since her grandmother's passing and is in need of a new job. The Summer Seekers follows them on their adventures that span two countries, Route 66, a famous flirtatious art-loving rock star, and bacon.

I won't give too much of the story away, but the minute a bacon sandwich was mentioned at the start of the opening chapter I was craving one, and I still haven't had one yet so I really need to sort that out. This is where Sarah shines as an author though, the small things that bring visual images or emotions. I read about bacon and it was almost as if I had some sizzling in front of me.

There's another line later on in the book where Liza comments "I've read books without feeling there's something else I should be doing." That hit hard, I love to read and was a big bookworm when I was younger, but as an adult with two jobs, anxiety (sometimes), and other things to deal with, I found I was either too tired, had other things to do, or just didn't have the concentration to read. I am trying to fit in some chill-out time into my days or weeks to shut off and pick up a book, and the motivation of a review or blog tour helps, and it feels so good.

All three women in this story want to feel good too, they want to escape the past, move on in a positive way, and reconnect with what they feel they've lost. Whether you relate to being stuck in a rut (Liza), hating the idea of a sedentary old age (Kathleen), or have no idea what to do with your life (Martha), these ladies and the way they learn from each other will win you over.

Where 'The Summer Seekers' lacked a little for me was the scene-setting in America as Martha and Kathleen explored Route 66. I just felt at times like I could have been reading about anywhere and expected a little more detail about the iconic route, whereas there was plenty to transport me straight to the UK coastline and Oakwood cottage.

It's still a book that kept me reading consistently until the end and I enjoyed the relatable moments and unexpected friendships too. It's delivered a splash of summer when I needed it, and I've already got my eyes on my next Sarah Morgan summer read (when mums finished with it!).

'The Summer Seekers is available from May 27th on ebook, audiobook, and paperback from all your favourite places to buy. If you need a warm cozy hug of summer adventure, then this is the read for you.
Laurenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03808145748741225659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1776484300972497515.post-16932539171114637102021-04-24T10:39:00.002+01:002021-08-25T15:52:55.547+01:00Carnovsky Jungle 3 in 1 Jigsaw Puzzle Review
One thing I have really enjoyed about lockdown is those moments, that turn into many minutes and hours when you can just sit and lose yourself in something, especially jigsaw puzzles. Late last year I was lucky enough to be #gifted a new puzzle from Ginger Fox and I can honestly say I've never done a puzzle like it.

Design duo Carnovsky has produced a series of 3 animal-themed 500 piece jigsaws all, each on a different animal theme, with a very clever twist. The bo contains 500 pieces and 3 pairs of glasses, just like the 3D glasses you might get in the cinema, but each has different colour lenses.

You can tell from looking at the box and enclosed print of the finished puzzle that there is more to see, but I definitely didn't expect quite such a wow from the end result, and I strongly suggest not cheating and only using the glasses when you've finished the puzzle.

The product details:

Retailed by Ginger Fox these puzzles cost £14.99 each and are available from Amazon. They cost £14.99 each at the time of blogging and include the box, 3 pairs of glasses, and a cardboard bag to store the pieces in. The lack of plastic (apart from maybe the glasses lenses) was nice to see. Choose from a jungle, animal, or ocean theme. I received the jungle one.

Doing the puzzle:

It started off as a solo effort, but mum couldn't resist joining in a bit later on and we got lost in the process quite a few times. It started off fairly easy - I was quite pleased with how quick I got all the edges done, and one corner of the design done, but then it got harder. This puzzle is definitely a challenge, and though having a print of the finished design helped a bit with some parts, quite a few times we were trying to match the patterns or colours up and were undecided on where pieces went/what they depicted. I think you have to be patient with this and be prepared to wait a while for the rhythm to set in and more spaces to be filled, but it's worth it.

The end result:

Mum said after we had finished the puzzle that she probably wouldn't choose to buy another one because you don't get the same enjoyment from the picture coming together as you would with normal puzzles, and it's a fair point - some parts of it really do look like nothing specific at first.

My reaction to finishing one puzzle was a sense of achievement, and I was a little bit mind-blown by the 3D images. Right now that means I'm curious to see what the other puzzles in the range would look like finished, although I'm not sure I would have the stamina to complete both of them.

Looking through the glasses was even better than I expected. Each picture is completely different, some even featuring animals that there was no hint of at all in the pattern. It was detailed, clear, and I felt a little childlike excitement, especially when I looked through the red glasses. No spoilers but the image are shown when you use those was probably the best of the 3, and the biggest surprise.

Good value for the price, entertainment value, and 3D element. The designers are very clever and although it's not a product I would necessarily keep buying, say if there were a larger series of them, I definitely hope to try another at some point.

Keep an eye on the blog or my Instagram as I'll be dropping in with progress on other puzzles, and any other free time activities I end up trying out. That's always a good sign right? So I thought it was about time I introduced you all to the author of Jack Of All Trades, and his You're Not Alone E.P which was released in July last year.

I had planned to upload this blog a lot sooner but Covid stress got in the way, perhaps in a good way, as it feels like an even better time to enjoy an uplift and some feel-good tunes.

Josef Pitura-Riley is a singer-songwriter based in London, and like many in the pandemic wanted a new goal and something to do. The end result is an E.P of self-recorded songs, where he plays all the instruments, sings, and produced each and every song.

The instrumentation is something you can't fail to notice through all 5 songs, and it's just pure happy. Lively, catchy, soft, and loud in all the right places, and perfect for those gigs all music fans are longing to safely happen this year. It's on point, well-produced, and the lyrics are sing-along.

Where this E.P did lack a bit was the vocals, there's so much character in the music and the lyrics, I was expecting Josef to really go for it in his vocal delivery, and didn't feel that came across as well as it could have done in my ears. I heard the opening bars of the music and just expected the vocals to hit me with the same punch, and they didn't quite get there, but that could be a totally different ball game live.

Overall though I really enjoyed listening to the tracks, it's hard not to respond to such a lively instrumental E.P, and I also want to give credit for Josef's approach to bloggers/writers. He not only took the time to look at my blog (and not everyone does), but also saw what I was into and sent a Disney cover for me to listen to. I thought it would be fun to do my own, but over on my blog (I couldn't keep up on Instagram), and have (after a bit of thought) answered all her prompts below. What would your choices be? do join in, in the comments and let us all know, it's always great to hear about the books everyone else loves.
It's one of the books I keep in my bookcase and even bought a new copy of when the original got too scrappy. I'm not really sure what struck me about it, especially as it's quite a haunting story, but it was incredibly well written, with quite a few twists in the story, which none of the TV versions have really managed to capture.
2 - A Book You Want A Sequel For

This is a hard one to answer, but I would say the Worst Witch series of books. I've always been a fan of witches, wizards, and the magical side of Halloween. I always remember reading those books really quickly and wishing there were more, and that's one bookish memory that has stuck with me from childhood.

3- A Book You'd Like To Live In

Easy answer, though another children's book (there may be a theme here) but the Faraway Tree series by Enid Blyton. Such an amazing writer and this book definitely fired up my imagination. I always used to enjoy escaping to the magical lands at the top of the tree.

4 - A Book Character You'd Kiss

Probably Jakob from the Twilight series. I was always more team werewolf than vampire, and although he really struggles with his change, there are some touching moments in the books between him and Bella. I think you'd feel his strength and protective nature in a hug and kiss. Obviously very volatile when vampires are around, but there was something quite appealing about that!

5. A Book Character You'd Fight

Mr Collins in Pride and Prejudice, not that he deserves a physical fight, but there's something about his character, especially as depicted in films that gave me the creeps every time I saw or read something. So I'd choose him for a verbal battle/talking to. preferably in the presence of his patron who he thinks so highly of. Just an annoying character I'd like to battle in some way.

6. A Book Character You'd Like To Be

Matilda (Roald Dahl) I love it when clever, funny children in books get one over on the mean characters, and the way Matilda dealt with her parents, and Mrs Trunchbull was really funny.

7. Your Favourite Book Cover

The short answer would be all the Christmas books- near Christmas is my favourite time of year to go shopping and all the festive books and covers jump out of the shelves and make me want to buy them all, though I think my already crazy reading pile might protest a bit at that! If I was going to choose one cover A Wedding In December by Sarah Morgan is ahead of the pack. The cosy log cabin in the snow is pretty much my idea of a Winter holiday, and the story behind the cover I really enjoyed.

8. Your Favourite Book Series

When I was younger I used to read a lot of book series, Famous Five, Secret Seven, all the Sweet Valley High and Babysitters Club books I could find. I've not read that many series recently, but one single book that's stuck in my mind is a hardback copy of The Polar Express that I won in a competition. I'd only ever seen the film and didn't know there was a book, but it's so pretty, with lovely illustrations - all capturing the magic of the story.

I haven't quite finished this novel yet, but I am well on my way and wanted to share some thoughts while there's still time to treat your e-reader/kindle, or even just buy a Christmas book to read all year round. Thank you to Elaine and ed. Pr for this #gifted review copy.

Christmas With The Teashop Girls is the second in this historical series and opens in late 1940. The novel follows Rose Neville, her mum, friends, and all the residents of the Sea View Guesthouse, along with workers at two Joe Lyons tearooms. Elaine weaved together a whole host of different characters in the first novel and adds to them further in this one. Lady Diana, her chauffeur/concierge, and Councillor Wendy Mould bring some spark and life to this wartime tale, and there are a few surprises as well.

An unexpected twist early on sees Rose and Flora stranded on a boat out in the water. It's almost a passing reference to something that could be dramatic, before the chapters flashback to earlier times and you're left wondering for quite a while until hints start to surface of something underhand.

I'm now at the part where I think I know who might be involved in tieing up Flora and Rose on a boat, but let's see if I'm right. I'm not giving anything away though, so you'll just have to make a purchase yourself and lose yourself in 1940's Kent (with a healthy dose of London).

I've read quite a few of Elaine's novels now, and there's always one particular thing, apart from the new characters that stuck in my mind, and this time it was the turn of phrase. Old fashioned expressions like someone going on their 'constitutionals' which I didn't really notice in previous books just made me smile this time around.

When I read historical fiction I always come back to why I abandoned it in the first place and still get bored of it sometimes. To me, however well written the books are if you've read enough of them, it just feels like the same old details, in a different place. Christmas With The Teashop Girls and one of my past favourites, The Girl With The Amber Comb are two exceptions that are both well worth a read.

I wish you all a safe and peaceful Christmas, and however you are able to spend it cherish this time and look forward to a better and more hopeful new year. Thank you all for reading, and if you do curl up with a new book this Christmas do pop on here or Instagram and let me know what you got/what you think.

Laurenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03808145748741225659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1776484300972497515.post-18397342104613182452020-10-22T17:00:00.002+01:002021-01-29T10:54:20.861+00:00Craft Consortium Christmas Stamps - And Handmade Cards
Look away now if you don't want a dose of festive craft, but if you do, welcome. This blog is all about the cute festive stamps from the brand Craft Consortium.

I don't know about any of my creative friends who might be reading this, but one of the things I enjoyed the most, at least in the early stages of lockdown was the time to completely switch off and sit and craft, without anything else in the back of my mind. I've finished a couple of projects, started a couple of cross stitch (they will be finished at some point), and had the chance to properly play with my Craft Consortium Christmas Stamps.

These guys are fast becoming my favourite brand for Christmas stamps, and very much up my street with their cute theming. One major plus point for me is the variety of stamp sizes on one sheet of stamps, making them ideal for different card sizes, sometimes building scenes, and making matching items like gift tags. The sets I have that I use for Christmas are

It's Snome Time Robin Mischief - which has a large main image, two smaller scene based stamps, and a couple of small accent stamps.

Little Fawn And Friends Best Friends - This one has individual stamps of woodland animals, and small elements like a tree stump and a toadstool. Some of these are great for snowy winter scenes.

Both these stamp sets are currently available on the website for £4.99 each (great value in my opinion). They come on a printed acetate sheet, with another plain sheet for storage and they are really nice quality compared to some stamp sets I've worked with before - full marks for tackiness and ease of stamping.

I'm including a few of my favorite Christmas card makes in with this post so you can see more of how these stamps can be used. If you are a stamper and you've heard of, or use this brand do let me know, I'd love to see what you make.

This post is not sponsored in any way, I just genuinely love using this brand, and am trying hard not to look at some of the other beautiful crafting goodies they have on-sale.
Laurenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03808145748741225659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1776484300972497515.post-81566897469892052262020-09-27T10:30:00.001+01:002020-09-27T10:30:01.545+01:00Beauty Samples & A Better Beauty RoutineI've never been quite sure how to describe my relationship with beauty. It's not that I'm disinterested, but I'm not the world's best at keeping up with any kind of routine. I can happily go without make-up, although let's face it, we all have things we'd rather cover-up, and I have in the past just grabbed whatever beauty products I've been gifted.

Safe to say I'm not neglectful of my skin, but I'm a bit haphazard, and I haven't really been that interested in the products I put on it, bar the fact that they helped, or made my skin feel or smell nice. Free beauty samples are changing that, and hopefully for the better.

My friend virtually sent me an opportunity to try out a perfume sample ages ago, via a So Post sampling campaign, and since then I've managed to get my hands on some pretty cool Happy Mail. A fair amount has been free samples through marketing offers, once from O2 priority, and other offers from brands, or shops like Boots. I also order from Feel Unique sometimes that offers 5 samples at a time/per month for £3.95, which is credited back as a voucher to spend on their website.

Part of the appeal is getting nice happy mail on the doormat, but also it's a lot more fun being able to try various make-up and skincare products that you wouldn't normally be able to afford to 'try', without the whole is it worth it, do I really need it, can I afford it dilemmas the full-size versions bring. It's the variety too, from serums and moisturisers to foundation, and even mini lipsticks and gloss, I've managed to source quite a few different brands, to really see what works for my skin and complexion.

I do feel it's changed my mindset a bit. I'm more enthusiastic about having new things to get out and try, saving some of the decent-sized samples I really like for best (i.e. making them last as long as possible) and not just picking something vaguely suitable from the cheaper aisles in the shops. I've also found myself using types of products I probably wouldn't think of before.

Some of the samples I've had lasted much longer than expected as well, the only problem is I want full-size versions of some things - I guess I'll need to start a fund for a few treats.
Some of my favourite samples are:

Urban Decay Hi-Fi Shine Ultra Cushion Lip Gloss (Naked) - I'm a fan of anything with peppermint oil in and although a bit thicker to apply than expected, this gloss was comfortable to wear, and moisturising on my lips. It lasts a while and has a slight tint as well. 20 shades available, which vary from purple and various shades of pink to gold - likely with more colour impact. I found a sample on Feel Unique. RRP £15.00

GLAMGLOW Galacticleanse - melting jelly balm cleanser. I LOVE this product - It smells nice, feels nice on, and my skin feels nice afterward! Just apply the jelly balm and melt it (and your make-up off with warm water) and no breakouts or reactions. It contains moonflower oil and bamboo charcoal. Definitely one of the favourite cleanser/facial wash/hot cloth cleanser type products I've tried. RRP £26.00

GLAMGLOW Waterburst Hydrated Glow Moisturiser - A bit of a theme with GLAMGLOW, but also products in blue packaging, with some kind of water/hydrating theme, as my skin can get dry or a bit dehydrated at times. It can be used day and/or night, and a big selling point is it's free from parabens phthalates and sulphates. A little goes a long way with this, my tiny sample pot is still going strong, so if/when I need a new moisturiser this may be an investment buy or gift idea. RRP £39.00

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Tint Cream - This was a lovely little find in a sample form. The shade I was sent is not enough coverage for those bad face days when there are things I'd rather cover-up, but this ticks all the boxes otherwise. SPF 30, non-comedogenic, safe for sensitive skin, and applies like a dream. My skin feels good so this is definitely on the list for re-purchasing.

I was recently #gifted the opportunity to try out Stickii Club, a sticker subscription service that is based in the US and ships worldwide.

Sign-up

When you sign up you can choose between 3 different themes: cute, retro (Victoriana, nature, vintage), and pop (quirky and offbeat), which you can switch between if you want to try out another theme one month. The site and social media feed also give you sneak peeks of what is coming up that month so you know what you're getting, or could be getting, if you are considering subscribing.

One thing that made Stickii stand out from the off is their use of in-house designers who put together the stickers etc. each month, under chosen themes. There's no sourcing from other suppliers and from looking at their past packs online, there's a lot of variety there.

What's Included?

Subscribers will typically get 6 sheets of stickers, sticker candy (loose stickers), a funky paper clip, a notepad/sticky notes pad, and a stationery item such as an embroidered patch, bookmark or mini letter set. All of this comes neatly packaged in a folder with different organiser pockets, and easily fits through the letterbox, which is another bonus. Regular subscribers also have the option to purchase a BAO (stationery binder that looks a bit like a bag) and additional pouches. Another thing I've noticed is the opportunity to buy stand-alone sticker sets or past subscription themes - great if you missed out/want to rebuy your favourite, or just stock up on some sale bargains.

COST - subscriptions cost $10 a month plus $2.50 shipping to UK addresses. (roughly £9.62).

Thoughts

Stickii teased me a bit when they gifted me with this opportunity. Back then, and now I can spy some seriously cute stickers and themes on their website that is very much me, and I'd definitely pick-up to decorate letters with, but what I received was a bit disappointing.

Some of the full sticker sheets featured quirky cat images, something that I don't really go for and have seen a lot in the UK before. The more unique stickers, embroidered patch, and small sticky notes pad were a lot of fun, but there wasn't enough use (or pages in the pad), and therefore value in some of the regularly included items for me.

So it's a no to the subscription, but if I'm running low on stationary and want to treat myself, or collect a few cute bits for gifts/crafting) then I would revisit the site and stock up for sure.

Laurenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03808145748741225659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1776484300972497515.post-71836281887707433522020-08-17T10:51:00.006+01:002020-08-17T15:25:33.094+01:00Theatre Severn Live Stream With Flash A Tribute To Queen
Read all about Flash: A Tribute To Queen and their weekend live stream at Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury.

One of the best things about lockdown and the very difficult time we are still going through is watching my favourite creatives, and people I've worked for/written about, embrace new things and push their comfort zones. Watching and then looking at the reactions afterward, not only from the crowd but from the band themselves is heartwarming to see. I think now more than ever we all need a bit of escapism, and to connect with each other and music if and when we can, and the human side of a band is something we all love to respond to.

Flash: A Tribute To Queen (one of my last clients before lockdown hit) teamed up with Wild Edric Media and Theatre Severn Shrewsbury to put on a live stream broadcast to support the theatre, a venue like many other arts spaces that are wondering what their future will shape up to be.

Flash played for an hour with a pro streaming, staging, and lighting set-up, running through a set-list that covered all the hits from 'I Want To Break Free', and 'Fat Bottomed Girls' to one of my personal favourites, the emotional 'These Are The Days Of Our Lives'. Launch song 'Fat Bottomed Girl's' was a bit shakey vocally, and it took them a little while to get used to the pin dropping quietness that came at the end of each song, but watching a band try, and then grow into a new situation is all part of the experience, at a time when Saturdays needed to be good again.

The staging looked very cool, the camera work was on point, and while it wasn't always vintage Flash vocally (I'm just a bit picky knowing what they can do), it didn't take too long before they were looking, performing, and sounding the part. When they got comfortable with the camera, the high notes were all there, the guitar solo's soared, and an amusing attempt to keep up with the live chat zooming across a screen to the side of the stage (try the slow chat mode, next time guys!) added some fun.

I really enjoyed watching it and seeing them adapt to a crowd on their couches, and feel a little bit proud.

It's been labelled a success by all involved, who all gave up their time to support the venue, and it was great to see people donating as they were watching. I didn't expect a Flash socially distanced lockdown cover, and definitely I didn't expect this, but both have been very much appreciated. Thank you for all the smiles guys, and I know we are all looking forward to whatever comes next.

#LetTheMusicPlay

#SupportTheArts

#WeMakeEvents

*All the people involved in making this stream are linked in the post if you would like to go and visit their pages. When I've been watching Disney videos on Youtube I see some tag videos on there, but I am not a fan of being in front of the camera, so I thought I'd blog my Q&A instead. If you're a blogger/Disney fan would be great to see your answers in a blog post too.

1. How did you get into Disney?

I grew up with the films, and they gradually entered my life when I was old enough to watch them (Bambi was banned at first for obvious reasons!). I remember not having much patience for Fantasia but fell in love with some of the other films on first watch.

At some point Walt Disney World really started to be advertised in the UK, and that got me even more excited, especially after some neighbours had been to the Californian version. To a young me it was just magical, and the ultimate place to go on holiday.

2. Have you been to any Disney parks?

Yes! I was really lucky to go to Orlando twice in the late 80's/early 90's with my family and absolutely loved it. We saved and went without to make the trips happen, and hands down they were two of the best holidays I've been on. We stayed on the monorail loop at the Polynesian Village Resort, and that place is amazing. I just love the whole Hawaiian theming. I spent ages in the pool as well as the parks, and they did some super-sized Mickey Waffles back then! I'd love to go back to Florida, though I am not sure how an older me would cope with all the rollercoasters now, I have never been on one that goes upside down!!

3. What's on your Disney bucket list?

There are a few things I haven't experienced before, so I'd love to see a Disney production in the UK such as Disney On Ice or a West End Musical. It would be great to hear some of my favourite songs live. I'd like to visit Disneyland Paris as well as I've never been to, and I know they have some unique attractions you don't get in Florida.

I did tick one small thing of my list already, as I've now bought Disney merchandise from a Disney store! It may sound silly but there was something kind of satisfying about walking around town with a Disney carrier bag, having spent in-store, and chatted with a cast member about all things Disney. Sadly our pop-up Disney store is gone, but will hopefully come back one day.

Apart from that, I'd love to go back to Florida as it's been so long, and there's so much more to see now.

4. If you could voice any Disney character in a film who would it be?

One of my favourite things is seeing the behind the scenes stuff on Disney DVDs of the actors voicing the script. It looks like so much fun, especially when you get to see some of the actor's mannerisms in the animated character. The animals always seem a lot of fun and full of expression, so maybe Timon (Lion King) or If Pluto could speak I'd choose him, one of my favourite characters.

5. Favourite Disney villain?

Maleficent hands down. I have watched the film quite a few times now, and I really enjoyed the story and the contrast between her initial joy and youthful energy, and the darker side she displays when betrayed by ambitious Stefan. Ursula is probably my least favourite, she just freaks me out for some reason.

6. First characters you'd queue to meet in the Disney park?

Chip and Dale and Pluto. Pluto is, without doubt, my favourite Disney dog, and I've always loved Chip n Dale - remembering which one's which, and trying to find Disney merchandise with them on.

7. If money was no object, what would be your ultimate Disney experience?

I'd like business class flights to Florida (I'd love to have the beds there and back), if its the ultimate experience, then they'd be serving my favourite Disney dishes on the flight there instead of the plane food I'd normally refuse. Then I would be escorted to my bungalow at the Polynesian by Mickey Mouse. There would be an Ohana feast and tropical fruit plate waiting to help me get over the jet lag.

8. What's your favourite Disney song?

My current favourites change. I used to really like Breaking Free when High School Musical first came out, but then got sick of it after Disney overloaded us with HSM content, same with Let It Go from Frozen. Hearing Idina Menzel sing it for the first time was a powerful thing, but I got sick of the Frozen hype too. My absolute favourite has to be Circle Of Life from the Lion King (animation). It's such a moving, beautiful song that to me is timeless. Hearing those harmonies, and picturing the scene from the film it plays out over is quite emotive. Plus I think the movie has been treated right and there's been no overkill. One of the best soundtracks overall in my opinion.

Thanks for reading all about my Disney favourites, goals, and more. I hope you enjoyed it. See on you on the next post, and keep on sharing the Disney magic.Laurenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03808145748741225659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1776484300972497515.post-66761364566493664322020-04-08T12:22:00.000+01:002020-04-08T13:28:31.978+01:00Spotlight On: Miranda Dickinson (Author)Hi everyone,

How is everyone doing? It's a crazy time to be alive right now, isn't it? I really wish everyone well and hope you are all staying safe, washing those hands, and keeping sane during these difficult and stressful times. Let's hope as a nation/world we can all play our part and beat this invisible evil virus into submission, and enjoy life (whatever life will be) more and as we should be. I've been wanting to catch up with some blog writing for a while to keep me busy but wasn't really sure what to write - so I thought I'd just shine a spotlight on some of my favourite things/people, etc. that are inspiring me right now, just to show a bit of support where I can.

Miranda Dickinson became one of my favourite authors a while back. I remember at the time being heavily in to historical sagas, and devouring so many I basically ended up with genre fatigue (if that's not a thing, I've just invented it!) and needed something new. I turned to chick-lit (if that's the right term) and never looked back. I currently have 4 of Miranda's books sitting on my bookshelf, and one other I've read and donated, and when my reading pile eventually goes down I will be catching up with the rest of her novels.

I've read Take A Look At Me Now, It Started With A Kiss, Fairytale Of New York, and When I Fall In Love more than once. Mum doesn't understand it, but if a book stays on my bookshelf it'll get read again. Re-reading a favourite is a great way to unwind when you haven't the headspace to concentrate on something new. All these novels were set somewhere different, all the characters have different professions or challenges to face - but there is one common theme that unites each one - they are easy to read. I enjoy all the twists and turns, the lively characters, and colourful settings of each story. My favourites change, but right now it's Fairytale of New York at the top of the list.

Miranda is a prime example of who I love to follow on social media as well - she is real, full of life, very supportive of all authors, bookshops (especially independents). She posts some great baking photo's as well, and let's face it cake is definitely an essential right now. Miranda is also hosting (as I write this) weekly Wednesday chats on her Facebook page, which are a nice distraction.

I'm not sure what else to say about this lovely lady, but do go check out her books - there is a new one coming called Our Story out on September 3rd on eBook, paperback, and audiobook, which you can preorder now. Go to Waterstones, Amazon, or check out Hive.co.uk - where you can nominate a local independent book shop to benefit from the sale if you buy from that link (such a good idea right now).

If you've read any Miranda Dickinson novels before, do comment below and let me know your favourite.

Stay safe and keep reading everybody.

I think it's safe to say we are living in uncertain times right now, and what a crazy time to be writing a book review. Crazy, but in some ways apt, as I think now is the perfect time to switch off from the news and social media when you can, and lose yourself in a book. I'm very happy to join in with the book tour for The Girl With The Amber Comb, and a big thank you to HQ Stories for gifting me a copy of the book for review.

Linda Finlay is a new author to me, but one through her seven published novels who is famed for West Country sagas based around traditional crafts, and The Girl With The Amber Comb is no exception. One of the first things that struck me as I started reading was the sense of place, and how deeply rooted the story is, in its Somerset location. I have read a lot of historical sagas, but this is the first one that I felt was really anchored in its location, and couldn't have been set anywhere else.

But it wasn't just the sense of place that made this novel for me, it was making the traditional craft a big part of the story, more than just a passing mention, or something the main character just goes off to do, sometimes.

This novel follows the story of orphan Eliza, a poor willow weaver dreaming of a more exciting life beyond her remote waterlogged cottage. When childhood friend Clem tells tales of a more exciting life along the river, the daydreamer and her 'grass is greener' philosophy embarks on a journey that is eye-opening on every level.

Eliza is portrayed as a naive and sheltered young woman and the author captures this so well. She is a character you can believe in, and while her short-lived infatuation with wealthy suitor Theo was somewhat expected, the circumstances that led to her fleeing the droves, and ending up 'caring for gentlemen' in disreputable Lavender House was not. I enjoyed the contrast between the remote withies, the slightly more bustling jailhouse environment of Lavender House, and the happy woollen mill and village. The descriptions of each and Elizas experiences of them were great to read.

For someone that got bored of historical sagas and diverted to chick-lit, Linda Finlay is a breath of fresh air in a genre that for me had got very samey. I look forward to learning more about traditional crafts and reading some more of her work. For now, I would encourage you all to stay safe and virus-free, and lose yourself in this new, heart-warming West Country tale.

The Girl With The Amber Comb was published on 19th March 2020 by HQ Stories. Available in paperback, eBook and audio versions.

With 60,000 views and counting since it's debut on January 17th, the video for Mardi Gras' latest single release is making waves, and I'm not surprised! Out of all the songs I've heard since discovering this Italian band, From Zero To One is one of the strongest, and most powerful.

Although the song has been out for a while, I have held back on doing a review because I didn't (in the best possible way) know what to write about this track, that I had a pretty instant love for. I downloaded it after first listen, turned up the volume, and hit the repeat button- which probably tells you all you need to know, but I will go on.

In 'From Zero To One' Mardi Gras has created a catchy, soaring pop/rock song, that's as slick as it is edgy. There are softer vocal moments, and a focus at the start on acoustic/piano in the mix, with the electric rock elements front and centre later on.

To add to the creativity there are some poignant spoke word parts in English, Estonian, and Italian that just strengthen this band's reputation for creating atmospheric, memorable songs. It really is a beautiful song, it makes me feel good when I'm having a bad day and has depth in the vocals and music that kept me engaged all the way through. The question is, how will they top this with their next release?
Alive, Alive, Alive - this was the word that kept jumping into my head as I was reading, enjoying, and honestly losing myself in Sarah Morgan's Christmas release, A Wedding In December. Every word and scene just jumped out of the page and brought so many pictures to my mind, I think it's safe to say I am now dreaming of cosy log cabins and Aspen winters.

I'm a bit sad to have finished the book now, but excited to join in the blog tour and hopefully introduce some new people to Sarah's books. I'm like a moth to the flame when it comes to Christmas books, I browse the shelves and want them all (despite a slightly big reading pile at home), but Sarah Morgan is a new author to me, so I started reading with no expectations or assumptions. I think this made reading A Wedding In December an even better experience.

The story follows the White Family: Maggie the mum, who is unsatisfied with life and work and on the verge of divorce, Nick the adventurer and university professor, and daughter Katie the exhausted doctor. They are all heading to Aspen with inner turmoil and secrets to hide, en route to youngest daughter Rosie's whirlwind wedding. The chapters are titled and divided Maggie, Katie, and Rosie, which confused me a little to start with, but it just seemed like a way to switch perspective as the story seamlessly moved forward.

There is love (of the new and rekindled kind) lust, and maybe a voyage of self-discovery or two, with some clever moments of tension in between. The White family has Christmas traditions just like many of us and it's that mix of Christmas traditions old and new that I think a lot of people will enjoy and relate to.

If some of the scenes were in an episode of a soap opera, I might have made a few comments predicting what was coming on screen, but in the pages of A Wedding In December, the slight sense of predictability didn't matter. The setting, and what it brought out of the characters as they opened up, was handled really well and kept me engaged throughout.

It's a page-turner with a few twists and turns, but there was just one thing missing. With a book so
visual and descriptive as this one, I just wanted to breathe in the fresh mountain air and smell the scent of pine cones as I read! Now if Santa could just be nice and leave the rest of Sarah Morgan's books underneath our Christmas tree that would be great!
Recently I was *gifted a copy of The Teashop Girls a new novel from Elaine Everest, and things are looking up.

I was skeptical before I started reading, expecting something along similar lines to Elaine's Woolworths Girls series, just in a tearoom, not a shop. Although there was a touch of familiarity about it, there was also quite a collection of interesting characters that really made this story stand out.
It's always the quiet ones you have to watch, and Mr Cardew is quite possibly the quietest of them all. He is barely mentioned in the novel, let alone suspected for the secrets he hides, so for me, it's a bombshell moment when those are revealed.

It's an unexpected piece of writing, in a time when we are well used to being able to predict what comes next, or at least read speculation from characters in the story. This is a novel with more interesting characters than I expected, and more action too.

Mr. Cardew, before his fall from grace, was a resident of Seaview Guest House, a place many of the interesting characters, such as Polish-born Anya, and fisherwoman Mildred calls home. It's run by Flora with help from her daughter Rosie and provides a comforting backdrop to the action.

The Lyon's teashops where Rosie and her friends worked was another key focus of the plot, although I think this was the only slight downfall in an otherwise excellent novel. I wanted to feel immersed in the world of Lyon's teashops, just as I did with Woolworth's in Elaine's other novels, but it just didn't happen for me.

Apart from that, I was fully engaged with the plot with no temptation to skip pages, and enjoyed the amount of action in every chapter. There are no page fillers here, just a....?
a somewhat aspirational love interest, so if you revelled in the movie star boyfriend in The Butlins Girls, then look out for Captain Hargreaves.
The Teashop Girls is out now, published by Pan Macmillan. Many Thanks to the publishers, Elaine Everest, and ed pr for the opportunity to review this novel, it's been a great read. Apologies also for the delay getting this up, I got swallowed up into an all-consuming freelancing black hole, but I'd rather read and devour every page, and put up the review how I want it to be.
